What is Mastering?

Mastering is the process of taking a finished audio mix and preparing it for distribution. It is the final step of audio post production. Mastering involves a combination of equalization, compression, limiting and stereo enhancement. The purpose of mastering is to optimize playback across all systems and media formats as well as balance the sonic elements of a stereo mix. It glues the song together and brings together all layers of the music.
